ROC (Royal Observer Corps) Cold War Nuclear Monitoring Post

ROC (Royal Observer Corps) Cold War Nuclear Monitoring Post

thingiverse

Approx. 1/20 scale model of the surface features of a Royal Observer Corps (ROC) Nuclear monitoring post from the Cold War era. Over 1500 of these were built in Britain after the Cuban Missile Crisis and were manned by members of the Royal Observer Corps. In teams of 3, they would have lived in the bunker and monitor any effects of a nuclear attack. The GZI (Ground Zero Indicator) was an instrument that could record the intensity and direction of a blast, whilst the RADIAC was a monitoring probe for fallout. Many have been demolished since then, with no traces remaining, whilst others have fallen into disrepair. Around 70 survive in excellent condition and serve as reminder of uncertain times during the Cold War Period. The ROC as a unit was stood down in 1991 with any remaining bunkers in service closing at that time.
