Roughting Linn (April 2009) Central

Area of extensive of carved outcrop near Ford, Northumberland. Roughting Linn is a large dome shaped quarried outcrop measuring 21m x 15m x 3.5m. It was first noted by prominent archaeologist Canon William Greenwell in the mid19th C and has since become one of the most visited rock art sites in England. Motifs consist of various cups, rings, penannular and groove designs scattered mainly on the upper and east facing surfaces. This section shows the carvings just north of the central area. Some of the fainter motifs haven’t been picked up. It was created from 34 out of 1150 photos captured during a test of SfM for Historic England / English Heritage in April 2009.
