Saab special tool PN 8390650 for measuring and setting the depth of the pinion/pinion bearing housing assembly in the transmission. This tool is difficult to find, so I modeled one after an original. There are some small differences for ease of modeling, but the critical surfaces are correct and the tool would function if produced to the tollerences needed. The measurement faces and calibration faces (refer to Saab manuals to see how the tool is used) should be machined to a +/- .0005" tolerance since the tool must be able to measure and locate the pinion to a +/- .0025" tolerance. The tangent to the measuring faces (curved) must be 15mm from the plane of the setup faces (again, +/- .0005"). Any deviation from the tolerance listed will only result in less accurate placement of the pinion. If you don't have the tool, and can only machine within .002", the tool may place the pinion in a less than ideal position. In theory, this would result in greater pinion noise and potentially vibration.
