Saint Luke the Evangelist

This sculpture comes from one of the external niches of the church of Ordanmichele in Florence. Saint Luke who is here represented is the patron saint of painters and of doctors. He is sometimes depicted writing the Evangile on the back of an ox, or painting the portait of the Virgin. He is here shown holding a book, which without doubt is the third Evangile of the Acts of the Apostles.
