Satay Set #3

Satay Set #3

At once familiar and yet strikingly different, Satay Set is a fine example of Dr Iskandar’s enthusiasm for developing ceramic-ware that is authentic and unique to the ‘food culture’ of Singapore. This stoneware set was developed for the popular satay – a dish of marinated meat skewers grilled over charcoal. The set was also Dr Iskandar’s tribute to the outdoor satay stalls of Glutton Square in the 1970s. The largest receptacle was designated for satay kuah kacang (peanut sauce dip) and has been fitted with a sturdy wooden handle for easy portability. The other containers were made for holding the bamboo skewer sticks and for condiments such as ketupat (pressed rice cubes), cucumbers and onions. Each receptacle is painstakingly ‘fluted’ – a process of producing grooves on the clay surface using an implement. The smaller containers are differentiated by a decorative nub or protrusion, in the shapes of a square cube, a triangular pyramid and a round orb.
