Savage Axis Magazine Replacement Base

This is a replacement base plate for a standard Savage Axis magazine. If the tab on you factory magazine breaks off,, this is a way to replace the damaged plastic piece. My design is for a short action magazine. I don't have a long action to compare. You will need an existing magazine, as this is not a complete replacement. You will also need a small 4mm wide spring from a pen and a thin piece of metal (T20 staple or needle). Build: Print the button and plate. Remove the support material. Fit the button into the plate to make sure they move freely. Trimming might be needed. Place the pen spring in the button and insert the button into the plate. Make sure the button moves freely. Once you have confirmed that it will function, insert the needle into the small marked hole. The holes are not big enough to press fit. I used a lighter to heat the metal red hot. I then pressed the pins into place, letting them melt the hole. Once the pin is holding the button, you can cut off the extra metal. The pin only needs to retain the button, they don't need to be push all the way to the other side of the part. I pushed mine about 4mm deep from the bottom. Sometimes the melted plastic can impede the buttons movement. Try to keep the pin aligned as you insert into the part and keep the button moving so that it is not frozen in place. Magazine plate is held on by three plastic tabs. One back tab and two sides. Lets call them tab B1(back),S1(pick one side),S2(pick the other side). Removing Plate: To remove the plate. Insert a flat head screw driver along the side S1. Pry away the plastic of S1 from the metal so that the plastic tab is clear of the metal. Pull the metal up out of the plastic at S1. Once the S1 side is free from the plastic tab, twist the metal away from the plastic so that the tab of S2 comes out of metal. The metal will be twisted in the direction of S1 as the plastic is twisted towards S2. Once the S2 tab is free from the metal, pull the metal up and forward so that the B1 tab is pulled out of the metal. Installing plate: Inset the B1 tab into the metal. Twist the metal slightly so that the S2 tab will clear the side of the metal. Push the metal into the plastic so that the tabs B1 and S2 are fully inserted into the metal. Take a flat head screw driver and pry the S1 plastic away from the metal. This should give you just enough space from the S1 tab to clear the metal. Push the metal all the way into the plastic and remove the screw driver.
