Scepter Wand Toy With Gem - Vase Mode

prusaprinters

I designed this toy scepter/wand to be printed in vase mode with a 1mm nozzle at .5mm layer height. It's a quick two-part print that glues together easily with super glue (CA glue). The thick layers give it a nice feel and that much plastic makes it pretty strong. The weakest spot is the skinny part below the gem. If the scepter is used as a club to, say, repeatedly whack a sibling or a table, then it's probably going to snap there. Otherwise, these have proven pretty durable.

The gem prints great on its own as a solid with with smaller nozzles/layer heights. The handle is a solid model, but I don't know that it's that useful printed solid.

Print Settings

Printer Brand:

Creality

Printer:

CR-10S

Rafts:

No

Supports:

No

Resolution:

.5

Filament:
eSun PLA+ Printing and Orientation========================
There are no supports required. Both parts are printedupside down in vase mode. This means that the printer uses one continuous extrusion to make the part. See below for a little more detail.

Handle: There are no solid layers involved. The bottom (really top really top of model) is left open to receive the gem. The printer starts with the outer lip and just corkscrews up the whole length of the part. It comes together at the top (really bottom) and closes up the tip.

Gem: I start with 1 solid layer for the bottom (really top of model). The printer then begins the continuous extrusion at layer 2. Because the model doesn't come to a point, the top (really bottom of model) is left open. This is completely fine, because that's the end that sticks into the handle.

You could print this solid in the same orientations, with no support, but you'd need to carve out a receptacle for the solid gem in the solid handle. If this is something people are interested in, I can definitely give it a shot. I think it should be straightforward.

Assembly

Run a line of super glue (CA glue) around the inside of the top of the handle and press the bottom of the gem into it. Line up the angles and it should mate well.

I used a bar clamp along the long axis and clamped lightly until the glue set.

Category: Toys & Games
