Scoby Prosthetic Leg

Scoby is a moscovian duck that is currently at the Indraloka Animal Sanctuary. He suffered from a severe infection which lead to an amputation. Previously, duck leg prosthetics have been successful when the amputation was below the knee joint. However, Scoby was amputated above the knee joint. There was very little for the prosthetic to attach to, so we created a “cup” which allows his nub to sit into. The “cup” has a joint to allow for various angles of his leg placement. In theory, we will be able to set the joint once the most accurate and comfortable angle is discovered. With his amputation being so high, we had to create an ankle joint and knee joint. The three stl files are intended to be printed separately, and then assembled (cup, leg, foot). Myself, Rachael Swartz (student), and Jocelyn Kolb-DeWitt (faculty) met Scoby in January of 2017. We quickly came up with our first prototypes. This prototype was printed on the Dimensions E1200. For our first porotype, the cup entailed a 2 material print (which was sent to Shapeways and Stratasys), but due to the time restraint we deleted this aspect. During our first fitting, we discovered our cup size was too large, and we account this to his loss of muscle mass. The file submitted is our second prototype. This project is not complete, but due to the time restraints and health of Scoby we are quickly trying to get him a functioning prototype. We intend to eventually create a silicon sock to be placed inside of cup to make it more comfortable for him. Upon finalizing our designs, we also plan to print Scoby a functioning swim foot. A lot of research was done prior to our prototype. We studied the anatomy of moscovian ducks, and watched vidoes of ducks walking to truly understand the angles and functionality of their joints. Rhinoceros 3D and Solidworks were the programs utilized to create this product.
