The QTR-1RC reflectance sensor uses a single pair of infrared LEDs and an infrared phototransistor. The phototransistor employs a discharge capacitor to provide a digital I/O line on a microcontroller for taking an analog reading of the IR reflectance, allowing measurement of the discharge time of the capacitor. A shorter discharge time of the capacitor indicates greater reflection. The limiting current resistor of the LED is configured to deliver approximately 20-25 mA of current to the LED when VIN is at 5V. The required current can be satisfied by several lines on a microcontroller's I/O, allowing the sensor to turn on and off via an I/O line for energy conservation. Due to their small size, they may easily be positioned to accommodate various applications such as line detection and proximity sensing.
