The Sentinel Class was intended to directly replace the Sol Class Destroyer, which had been serving for over 200 years at the time of the Sentinel’s commission. While some of these are standard short-range communication arrays most of them are part of the ship’s passive detection system, which measure distortions in space-time (gravity) to detect ships and other bodies at ranges in excess of 90 lightyears in real-time.
