## Introduction In case you don't know. This whole collection is based on the amazing work originally by [@JAWong](https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:26979) back in 2012 whose version I use in this build. [@Dakanzla](https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2525047) adapted it in 2016 and made his his own version with magnets. He also made all of his extension pieces availabe. Which are complete collections for their own. #### This is my complete Collection which I printed in various colors and painted it with acrylic paint. #### Initially my goals were: 1. Make every piece unique 2. Keep a consistent style 3. Paint it with durable paint which is easy to apply 4. Use parts of the original game if not printable 5. Make it fit into the original box (35x35x7cm - in Germany it's this box: https://amzn.to/39ud7RC) 6. Fit it into the box with everything in place so nothing moves around and gets damaged 7. Use most of the available things on thingiverse to do less on your own and finish the project in a less ridiculous amount of time. 8. Publish the work on thingiverse to reduce the work for others. #### 1. Unique pieces Because with a 3D-printer the opportunities are endless I thought. That included different models per player (settlement, city, road). Every terrain piece should look slightly different. It was more difficult than expected. On the one hand there are a variety of ready to print pieces out there. On the other hand the several styles don't fit sometimes (IMO). It took literally as long to find the parts I liked as to print them. Sometimes I found a part which did not work for my setup. Especially the player pieces were hard to find. Because of the hours of searching it took me to find all these beautiful pieces from the community I upload my whole setup which includes many plain reuploads. Sorry to the makers for this! I referenced my thing as a remake. Some of the original pieces I had to remix (e.g. make smaller/bigger). You find the original pieces down below or even in my very own settlers collection: https://www.thingiverse.com/Fratzinger/collections/catan #### 2. Keep a consistent style Beside the magnet/interlock/low level systems there are different styles for trees or the wheat pieces for example. This requirement made the search even more difficult. #### 3. Paint it Never done this before. I wanted it to look high class with a certain amount of detail. I wanted it to be not glossy. I was aware of the needed effort so I chose a way only one layer of paint is needed. Dull-colored acrylic paint worked very well. I tested it on a test print with scratches from fingernails which did absolutely nothing. Even with a sharper thing the paint is not easy to remove. Just for reference: I used "Kreul Mattfarben" (I'm located in Germany) which can be found here: https://amzn.to/2xwlwXE for example. I used and combined a lot of different colors. I did not buy a set like the linked one. I would use them again any time. #### 4. Use original parts Because I wanted it to look and feel like a high-class product which also could be a real original game I wanted to use original parts as long as it fits into the style. For this I bought an old "Siedler von Catan"-box on ebay, which had all of the parts (including the old wooden pieces). Finally I reused the following parts: - commodity cards - change cards - reference plates - 2 dices **Besides the terrain and border pieces I decided to print:** - port markers (which makes sense) - number tokens (it made a more consistent look to me instead of using the original ones) - robber (the original one is already a plastic piece but I wanted every piece to feel the same) #### 5. Fit into the original box I conciously decided against a selfmade version. Boy, there are some neat looking CNC milled boxes out there. But on the one hand I'm not capable of making one of those and on the other hand I have like a lot of boardgames which all fit nicely into my shelves. I wanted settlers to be no exception. In Germany nearly every board game has the dimension of 35x35x7cm. I was not quite sure if all parts would fit into the box until the very end. I searched for inlay parts on thingiverse but found nothing that fitted my needs, which makes me wondering if we germans were the only one with this form factor?! Please proof me wrong. So I decided do design one of my own. #### 6. Nice fit I used Tinkercard for designing the inlay pieces. You can download them here as well. They are only designed to work with my setup and probably won't work if you change some parts. I designed them to fit my 200x200x300 printer so I made smaller pieces. Infill is not really required. I did it with a infill of 10%, a layer height of 0.2mm, a wall thickness of 0.8mm and a lower/upper thickness of 0.6mm. Except the last 3 layers a lower/upper thickness of 0.2mm would be enough. You want to save material weight. These things get unexpectedly heavy! - the place for the terrain pieces are clear. No certain order is needed for this. There is enough room to hold them all - the dices, robber and chance cards find their places on the side underneath the terrain pieces - the big cube-thing has space to hold the commidity cards, port markers and number tokens. The reference plates fit nicely on top of it. - the player pieces within sachets go into the 4 boxes. - finally the border pieces get stacked on the remaining places with the two spacers on top of it to fit in the box Because I made the inlay pieces with TinkerCAD, I also made them public over there: https://www.tinkercad.com/things/jjNEG2gwhwU I would love to here from you when you make a remake! #### 7. Use existing models on thingiverse Because out there are such an amount of beautiful pieces which I definetly cannot design this good as they are, I used a lot **Terrain Pieces:** - https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:26979 (1x brick, 1x desert, 1x wheat, 1x wood, 1x wool) - https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1132283 (2x brick, 2x ore, 1x wheat, 2x wood, 2x wool) - https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2686700 (2x wheat, 1x wool) - too high. - https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:444471 (1x wood) - https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2160064 (1x ore) **Border pieces:** - https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:26979 **Settlements, cities, roads:** - https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:687162 - https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1071048 - http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1079138 - https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2551076 - https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1098982 (**caution**: need to scale up to fit!) **Misc:** - https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:815345 (Ports) - https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2482185 (Robber) Hopefully I did not forget something. **You'll need some original parts:** - commodity cards - chance cards - 2 dices - reference plates ### 8. And there it is **If you do makes/remakes/... please let me know. It would be a pleasure to see them!** **Pssst. I also did a seafarers extension which I will publish soon.** Also see my [settlers collection](https://www.thingiverse.com/Fratzinger/collections/catan) on Thingiverse:
