Settlers of Catan Dual Extrusion Complete Original & 5-6 Player Expansion with magnetic tile bases and full storage case

After spending nearly two months gathering, modifying, and printing parts, I have finally put together a satisfying set for Settlers of Catan that covers both the Original as well as the 5-6 player expansion. You can expect to find every model you will need to print for the game including the storage case, the only non-printable parts are the magnets (which can be considered optional, but highly recommended) and the dice bag for the development tiles (also optional). The majority of the parts are designed for a dual extrusion printer or configured to have filament changes at specific layer heights. However, an alternative would of course be to ignore all of that and paint the parts yourself. All of the prints were also designed to fit on my FlashForge Creator Pro, which has a limited build volume of X=225mm, Y=145mm, Z=150mm. This is mostly reflected by the rather large modifications I made to the storage case, which I've modeled from scratch based mostly on the original concept. Enjoy! Print Settings Printer: FlashForge Creator Pro Rafts: Doesn't Matter Supports: Doesn't Matter Notes: Here are some notes on all of the pieces and how they should be printed (skip further if you want the exact part counts): Terrain Hex Tiles: 5mm Magnetic Base Tile-Magnet-Base.stl Water without Harbor Tile-Water-Blank.stl Water with Building Costs Tile-Water-Blank-Cost-Top.stl Tile-Water-Blank-Cost-Base.stl Two printing options available Print in dual colors using the two models as normal. Print only using a single extruder head, using pause commands at the following Z heights so you can change your filament color. This will color the tops of each cost symbol the correct colors. These Z heights should work whether you choose to use 0.1, 0.2, or 0.3 layer heights for your print. Number Markers ("Number" (Letter:Pips)): For this one, combine the top model of each appropriate number with a single bottom model of the same number. For numbers that contain multiple bottom models, a separate print should be made with each. In the standard game set, numbers 6 and 8 have a higher probability of being rolled and are usually a more urgent color like red. Resource Markers: Brick Resource-Brick.stl Ore Resource-Ore.stl Wheat Resource-Wheat.stl Wool Resource-Wool.stl I recommend printing this with rafts and supports. Wood Resource-Wood.stl Development Markers: Combine Development-Base.stl with each of the appropriate face models Development-Knight.stl Development-Monopoly.stl Development-RoadBuilding.stl Development-VictoryPoint.stl Development-YearOfPlenty.stl I recommend flipping these upside-down when printing, this way the back of the pieces are more consistently the same. If you print the pieces with the backs attached to the platform, you could pick up various bits of previous print colors onto your pieces that could potentially give them identifying marks Player: For each player you will find a Village, City, Road, and Road Connector model. I have provided six different player themes so you can use a different theme per player. Note, the road connection pieces are not necessary for the game and are optional to use as spacers between road pieces. I have also included my recommended colors: Aztec - Blue Player-Aztec-Village.stl Player-Aztec-City.stl Player-Aztec-Road.stl Player-Aztec-Road-Connector.stl China - Red Player-China-Village.stl Player-China-City.stl Player-China-Road.stl Player-China-Road-Connector.stl Egypt - Yellow or Orange Player-Egypt-Village.stl Player-Egypt-City.stl Player-Egypt-Road.stl Player-Egypt-Road-Connector.stl Medieval - Black Player-Medieval-Village.stl Player-Medieval-City.stl Player-Medieval-Road.stl Player-Medieval-Road-Connector.stl Modern - Silver Player-Modern-Village.stl Player-Modern-City.stl Player-Modern-Road.stl Player-Modern-Road-Connector.stl Roman - White Player-Roman-Village.stl Player-Roman-City.stl Player-Roman-Road.stl Player-Roman-Road-Connector.stl Special: Dice Player-Dice-Body.stl Player-Dice-Pips.stl Sandstorm Piece Sandstorm.stl You can pause the print at 4.5mm to change filament from the base to the twister. Longest Road Trophy Trophy-Base.stl Trophy-LongestRoad.stl Largest Army Trophy Trophy-Base.stl Trohpy-LargestArmy.stl Storage Case: Tolerance Test A and B Storage-Tolerance-Test-A.stl Storage-Tolerance-Test-B.stl Some tolerance test pieces. I recommend printing these out along with one hinge pin first. These will help you calibrate your printer and slicer to fit tolerances between the various compartments and joints found in the final pieces. Both pieces require support generated directly under the hinge joint, where the hinge pin goes. Hinge Pin Storage-Hinge-Pin.stl These pins hold towers A and B together via revolving joint. Tower Base Storage-Tower-Base-A.stl Storage-Tower-Base-B.stl Each tower A should connect with a tower B with some hinge pins. You will need support when printing these parts just under the hinge joints. Magnetic hex bases and shelved insert pieces should fit directly into the towers Shelf Insert Storage-Shelf-Insert.stl Use the shelved insert pieces to carry the hex tiles and as a shield to block the resources you own during game play. Tower Mid (Expansion) Storage-Tower-Mid-A.stl Storage-Tower-Mid-B.stl Much like the Tower Base pieces, you can print the Tower Mid pieces to gain some extra tile space needed for the expansion. Tray Topper Storage-Tray-Topper-A.stl Storage-Tray-Topper-B.stl You can use the top trays to carry the majority of the pieces. These are broken into trays A and B. Tray A is divided into 6 sections and are meant to carry the pieces for the six players. If you are only making the original set then you will have some extra space. Tray B has some specialty slots made to carry all of the Development Tiles, Number Chips, Harbor Ports, Dice, and the Sandstorm piece for the original and expansion. Top Cover Storage-Top-Cover.stl These will hold the storage case together by clamping the two halves together and locking them into place. Base Cover (Expansion) Storage-Base-Cover.stl This is recommended if you are printing the expansion set, it will add a little more stability for holding the two halves of the case together. Post-Printing Installing the magnets into the bases. Depending on your print, you may need to drill or file the magnet holes on the bottom of these bases. The magnets should press fit into the holes without completely damaging the hole and caving it in, should not come out even when pulled on by another magnet, and should freely rotate to align with any magnet nearby. For example, it's not easy to randomly configure the tiles on the board since they are all much more bulky and it's not easy to pick them at random when putting them together to make the board. Here are my recommendations for setting up and playing the game. Start by laying out all of the magnetic tile bases. Choose one corner of the board and place the building cost water tile there (facing outwards so players can read it). Also place the other two building cost water tiles in every other corner from the first. On both sides of each building cost water tile place a water harbor tile, there are different variations of the harbor tiles but it doesn't matter which one goes where. Now choose one of the harbor water tiles and place a 3:1 Generic harbor marker there, moving clockwise, skip every other harbor port and place another 3:1 Generic marker until you run out (note that it will not be evenly distributed, but that is okay). In order to choose which of the harbors get which special resource type, pick up one of each of the normal resource tokens and shake them around in your hand. Randomly drop one from your hand into each of the remaining empty harbor spaces, this will determine which of the special harbor pieces go where. To determine which tile types go into the rest of the spaces we will do the same as before, pick up one resource token of each type, matching the count of tile types that need to be replaced. For the desert tiles, you can choose some other pieces like the player village pieces to mix with the resource tokens. Again, randomly drop them into each empty magnetic tile base until all of the tokens are placed, then replace each token with the tile type that it represents. Now go ahead and place the number tokens as you would the normal game and start playing! Here are a few additional tips while you play the game: There are exactly enough Shelf Inserts for each player to have one, this works very well for hiding your resource types (since they are now tokens, rather than cards that can be hidden). The longest road and largest army trophies have been designed to fit inside the shelf inserts as any other tile. This also means that when a player wins one during gameplay, they can use the shelf insert they are using to carry those trophies. When a player is going to steal a resource from you, you can place half in each hand and have the thief choose one. Return the resource tokens from the hand not chosen and then split the remaining again in both hands. Do this until the thief has chosen a hand with only one resource token and that is the one they steal. The development tiles can be mixed upside-down on the table or put into a bag for random drawing. Storage Case Tiles (including the longest road and largest army trophies) should fit into the Shelf inserts with room the spare. For tiles of the original set, there is actually a significant amount of room above each shelf as well, allowing you to place a rather large tile (like the mountain or lighthouse harbor) on the very top shelf sticking out above it; for the expansion shelves, there is very little extra room to do this but still plenty of shelf space. Evenly split the magnetic tile bases and place them into the bottom of each of the tower bases, then place a shelf insert on top of each. For the expansion, two tower mids can hold the magnetic tile bases while the other two each hold a shelf insert. The tower base core and tower mid core (with caps) are designed to carry all of the resource tokens and fit in the center between all four towers. One of the tray toppers is designed with six semi-evenly sized compartments, this can store each of the 6 player piece sets. The other tray topper is designed to fit the rest of the remaining piece types for both the original and expansion sets (see my pictures if you are unsure where each piece fits). There are holes placed at the bottom of many of the tray slots to allow you to insert your finger and push the pieces out more easily. The square slots hold the development cards; you can use two slots to fit the original set and the third can hold the expansion. The round slots hold the number tokens and the sandstorm (thief) piece; the expansion set has barely enough room, you will have to place one piece number-side-down into the finger hole slightly in order to get them all to fit. Between the circle slots are two square (or diamond) shaped slots, these should perfectly fit the dice. Then there are three oddly shaped slots to the side of the round slots, these hold the harbor tokens. The center slot (with an open slit across the side wall) can hold up to 5 of the generic 3:1 harbor port pieces, while the other two can carry the rest of the harbor port pieces stacked on top of each other. Lastly, there is the rather large square compartment which you can use for whatever you want, I personally used it to carry my folded dice bag. The towers should all have slotted grooves on each of their backs, this allows you to lock the cover pieces onto them for closing the box. If you are including the expansion, then the tower mid's should be attached to the top of the tower bases using the slotted grooves. The tray toppers (and optionally a printed set of instructions) can be placed on top of the towers and then locked into place using the top covers. A recommended addition is to also include the base covers to help with any slack that may appear on the bottom of the case (especially when you have tower mid's added, creating a larger case).
