Sim racing wheel with quick release

thingiverse

This is my first attempt at 3D printing a sim racing wheel (and at 3D printing in general). Credit goes to the original deisgner of the wheel [stanoba](https://www.thingiverse.com/stanoba) for his excellent work with the [Audi DTM wheel](https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4891321). Credit also goes to [RamjetX](https://www.thingiverse.com/RamjetX) for the original [G25/G27/G29 adaptor](https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2625316) which was used in my project. Video of the [wheel](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bBQAkfC0uoc) Video of the wheel in [action](https://youtu.be/AX20vc6zHHM) The few modifications I made to the original design are :- - Split the base into 3 parts as the orignal base was too big for my Ender3 v2. I was also not comfortable to print any single part that took more than 10 hours which is why I decided to split it into 3 parts instead of 2. The parts were then super glued together and seem to hold up fine. - Instead of using aluminium pipes to strenghten the base, I just filled in the extra space to 3D print. Seems to work fine for me. - The quick release I bought online does not work with the original G25/G27/G29 adaptor as the holes were not aligned. I had to modify the adaptor so that the outer holes are 18 degrees off center. I guess this depends on the type of quick release you end up getting so this may not be necessary. - I used the [Arduino Pro Micro](https://www.sparkfun.com/products/12640) with the [Arduino Joystick Library](https://github.com/MHeironimus/ArduinoJoystickLibrary) to get the buttons working. The device will appear as a USB game controller in Windows 10 with up to 32 buttons available by default. Code was basically from the library example modified to include more buttons. - Connecting the Arduino to the PC via USB coiled cable with GX16 connector for easy removal. Pretty much everything else is the same as the orignal design. Material used :- - [Universal wheel quick release](https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005003483602545.html?spm=a2g0o.productlist.0.0.2baa705dQel4Zr&algo_pvid=de9eb118-fdd4-47a7-93f0-15d484ab3bd1&algo_exp_id=de9eb118-fdd4-47a7-93f0-15d484ab3bd1-17&pdp_ext_f=%7B%22sku_id%22%3A%2212000025991773600%22%7D) - [3mm thick aluminium sheet plate (A4 size)](https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005003311285890.html?spm=a2g0o.productlist.0.0.82ee3206wcNV44&algo_pvid=fc65c578-5d2e-422e-88aa-c9763bc67675&aem_p4p_detail=20211206135632788390964062400002456709&algo_exp_id=fc65c578-5d2e-422e-88aa-c9763bc67675-9&pdp_ext_f=%7B%22sku_id%22%3A%2212000025144318664%22%7D) - [GX16 4 pin aviation connector and wall panel](https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005002628769312.html?spm=a2g0o.productlist.0.0.126343fbedaa54&algo_pvid=cb33216e-5be8-4496-b46e-2a59d526f543&algo_exp_id=cb33216e-5be8-4496-b46e-2a59d526f543-0&pdp_ext_f=%7B%22sku_id%22%3A%2212000021469284044%22%7D) - Coiled USB cable. Hardest part for me was the metal work on the aluminium plate. I've not done any metal work before and it shows from the result with holes for buttons being misaligned and all sort of noob mistakes. All in all, it was a good 1st 3D printing project and a good learning experience. I got to learn more about the process of 3D printing, manipulating designs in blender, etc... Let me know if you have any questions and I'll be happy to help out. Update - 2022-02-12 - Added STL for a split front plate.
