Just cut out 3x3 inch square tile and press it down onto the tool, and it will leave guide lines for you to go back and cut. Saves time just make sure you have a square cut and line up the corners. Left it flat on top so you could actual see if the corners where lined up before adding pressure to imprint the lines. This is for xps foam or material of similar malleability.
