Simplified CubeSat Frame Design

The proposed CubeSat concept uses Direct Metal Laser Sintering (DMLS) of Aluminum AlSi10Mg to reduce part count, CubeSat frame weight and increase strength within one convenient package. The concept uses additive manufacturing to optimize strength of the CubeSat structure while also minimizing weight. This is done by a truss within a truss design, where the side panels consist of load bearing truss patterns in two dimensions. This design cannot be completed with standard manufacturing techniques or existing materials due to the uni-body design. The design also uses integrated studs for mounting payloads within the CubeSat structure. These studs help dissipate heat from the payload to the skin through direct conduction. The other advantages of these two major features include reducing the number of components required for complete assembly and a path for wire routing outside of the main frame were payloads will be stored without sticking outside of the body. To complete the assembly, not including payload, only three [3] major components exist for the CubeSat skeleton (Main Frame, Access Panel and Payload Cap. Only twelve [12] fasteners are used to secure the payloads within the body and secure the access panel. During assembly it is possible to route wires between internal components through the truss design within the body. The wires would be shielded from abrasion, and out of the way in the interior of the CubeSat. For a more detailed description of the design please see the pdf file located within the project.
