Sla printed chess set

When I bought a cheap chess set on Amazon, I was very disappointed with the piece quality. Since I was familiar with the concept of SLA 3d printing I decided to buy a printer and create my own pieces. My first instinct was to look online for chess piece files that I could print, but I couldn’t find any that would sufficiently use the strengths of SLA 3d printing, so I created my own. When I bought elegoo mars, it came with a print file for a chess rook, that is supposed to be a torture test for the printer. I very much liked it, so to make my own pieces I combined the theme of traditional chess pieces with said rook by elegoo, which resulted modern looking pieces that extremely well show the strengths of SLA 3d printers. They feature numerous details that would be incredibly hard to manufacture with traditional methods. For example, the indent between the bricks on the rook that is only 0.1mm deep, or the spirals in the center of some pieces.Next, I decided to go one step further and also design holders for them, since the original board came with simple small plastic bags for the pieces and I was not satisfied with having to store them in such a manner. So, I created the part named board insert which is meant to be attached inside the chessboard where there is space and it features indents in the shape of the pieces. This part shows the precision that is achievable with SLA printing as all the pieces fit with no additional post processing required and the tolerances are very small (~0.1mm).One of the greatest strengths of this design compared to other chess pieces is the high complexity with relatively low cost. I believe that this chess set combined with a chess bord created using FDM printing has the potential to revolutionize travel chess set market, since it could be very cheaply manufactured and would still look good unlike the set that I bought that inspired this project.Ervins RodertsCoventry university
