Smart Filament Box
thingiverse
This project is still in its early stages, but it's making good progress! I've been working on building an enclosure for my filament spool that also tells me how much filament is left on the spool. This way, I'll know whether there's enough left to finish a print. To build this enclosure, you'll need 2 x 608 bearings, 2 load cells, 4 M4 screws, and 4 M5 screws (or whatever size screws your load cell requires). The enclosure incorporates 2 x 1kg load cells to get accurate measurements. In the front, there's a 16x2 LCD display that shows the filament level. The whole thing is powered by an Arduino Nano. I'm also using a DHT11 sensor for temperature and humidity readings. As for the power supply, I haven't decided yet, but it'll probably be USB. You can check out the circuit diagram here: https://www.circuito.io/app?components=97,514,10167,11022,13879,13879,417986 Update 1: I've added a slightly upscaled spool cone that should work better. Update 2: I've uploaded a basic firmware with the core components working. You can find it here: https://pastebin.com/JV68nJAp Update 3: I've added mounting holes for the LCD and a place for desiccant to the box's bottom panel. Update 4: I've added F360 files to the project.
