SmithVent is a dynamic team comprised of Smith College engineering alumni and friends who worked together to develop a streamlined, affordable, and rapidly manufacturable pneumatic design specifically tailored to meet the needs of COVID-19 patients. This user-friendly design was crafted with ease of use in mind for healthcare professionals, allowing for gentle air delivery to the patient while also enabling proning if necessary and liberation from ventilation. Additionally, the SmithVent design offers the capability for both volume control and pressure support modes. The team employed a manufacturing strategy that utilizes readily available, off-the-shelf components, which significantly reduces complex machining requirements and ensures seamless compatibility with current medical equipment. The enclosure design is intuitive and easy to clean, while the sophisticated control system provides flexible inputs, patient data monitoring, and various levels of alarms. To empower others to recreate, develop further, or improve the SmithVent design, the team has carefully packaged all necessary materials, including documentation on the remote project management process, master system diagram, bill of materials, requirements compliance, circuit diagrams, wiring diagram, production code and commentary, user interface wireframes, alarm diagrams, CAD assembly drawings, CAD views, and editable CAD files.
