## Customizable Snap Assembly Cable Passthrough Grommet ### Update 12/22/20 Updated customizer (openscad) script to version 5.4, with the following changes: * Grommet diameter value now refers to the outside diameter, instead of the inner bore diameter as in previous versions. Now the diameter value matches the size hole it will fit. (ex: a 20mm grommet fits into a 20mm hole) * Ring on top of snap is slightly looser than in previous version, making it easier to apply. * Ring on top of plug is smaller than in previous version for the same reason. ### Description This is a remix of a tarp grommet. I made two main changes to this remix, in order to make it suitable for passing wires through it and make it easier to place the snap on and off: * Internal plug: There is a plug that fits into the internal bore of the grommet. * Strain relief slits: There are 5 slits in the wall of the grommet, to make it easier to fit the grommet through holes in rigid materials like metal or glass. The slits also make it easier to attach the snap and plug. ### Purpose of plug The plug was designed as a wire gasket within the grommet. The idea is that the grommet's inner circumference can be the size of the largest cable part you need to pass through it (ex: the head of a USB cable) while the plug can fit over the thinner section of what you passed through (ex: the USB cable itself). ### Types of plugs There's actually only one type of plug, but three types of holes through the plug: 1. Cylinder: A cylindrical hole through the center of the plug. This type is useful for passing through typical round cables. 1. Rectangle: A rectangular hole through the center of the plug. Useful for flat cables. 1. None: This is a solid plug with no through-hole. This type of plug is useful for temporarily closing off a grommet while not in use. Both the Cylinder and Rectangle-type plugs are split down the middle so that each half of the plug can be placed around cables. ### Provided models I generated 3 different STL files: 1. 20mm diameter bore with 5mm bore plug, and 1mm gap (for 1-2 USB cables) 1. 20mm diameter bore with 10mm bore plug, and 1mm gap (for 3-5 USB cables) 1. 40mm diameter bore with 20mm bore plug, and 1mm gap (for 2-3 power cables) ### My uses I've used the grommet on a couple of projects. 1. As a way of passing a flat USB cable for a security camera through a piece of glass. 1. As a way of passing USB and power cables through a metal cabinet. ### NOTE The OpenSCAD script generates models with errors, though the errors are fixed by slicers and don't cause printing issues.
