Lysimachus, born circa 360 BC and passing on to the afterlife in 281 BC, was a Macedonian military commander and successor of Alexander the Great. He rose to power as a king in 306 BC, ruling over Thrace, Asia Minor, and the kingdom of Macedon. The ancient historian Justin recounts that Lysimachus secretly supplied poison to an individual condemned by Alexander to die a prolonged death. As punishment for this act, Lysimachus was thrown into the jaws of a ferocious lion. However, he courageously overpowered the beast with his bare hands and earned Alexander's admiration. Coins minted during Lysimachus's reign featured his likeness on one side and a powerful lion on the other. This particular coin is an Augustan reproduction, created between 23 BC and 14 AD, of an original design from the second century BC.
