The I-5 from the Fifth Fighter (VT-11) is a Soviet light maneuverable semi-glider fighter of mixed wood-metal-linen construction. Designed and built in 1929 by a team of imprisoned designers and engineers under the joint supervision of aircraft designers Dmitry Pavlovich Grigorovich and Nikolai Nikolaevich Polikarpov in the "Central Design Bureau — 39" of the OGPU named after V. R. Menzhinsky in Butyrskaya prison in Moscow. Design work and construction were carried out on the instructions of the Red Army Air Force and under the control of the OGPU Board. The first flight was on April 30, 1929. He was in service with combat flight units of the Red Army Air Forces from 1931 to 1942. It was mass-produced from 1931 to 1934, the main type of combat aircraft in the fighter aviation of these years. A total of 816 cars were built, including prototypes.
