In one of his ‘clay diary’ entries, Dr Iskandar observed the many functional uses of the bowl but significantly emphasized that this vessel was also “an article of visual pleasure”*. Indeed, Dr Iskandar has explored ways to enrich the aesthetic experience of the bowl. He incorporates elements of surprise and discovery and creates dynamic tensions by playing with opposing impulses. Sphere’s exterior adopts a minimalist aesthetic with its plain body sparingly decorated with geometric ‘strips’ and a matte finish. In contrast, its interior is sumptuously embellished with organic patterns of swirls and spirals that have a gloss finish. These divergent facets are united by the strip that runs through both the interior and exterior (which can be seen from an aerial view). This sturdy bowl bears a cylindrical form and has been decorated with resist methods. Interestingly, Dr Iskandar had used baby talcum powder as a flux in this work, producing the translucent, glossy effects in the interior.
