A mythical creature known as the sphinx is depicted with the head of a human and the body of a lion. According to ancient Greek tradition, this enigmatic being has a human head, a lion's haunches, and sometimes even wings like those of a bird. In mythology, the sphinx is often portrayed as ruthless and merciless, notorious for posing riddles that only a select few can answer correctly. Those who fail to solve its puzzle meet a fate reminiscent of mythological tales, where they are brutally killed and devoured by this ferocious monster. This deadly version of the sphinx is most notably featured in the epic tale of Oedipus. Notably, the Greek sphinx is typically shown as a female figure, whereas its Egyptian counterpart, known as an androsphinx, is depicted as a male. Interestingly, the Egyptian sphinx is often viewed as benevolent, yet possessing incredible strength similar to that of its more malevolent Greek counterpart. Both versions are believed to serve as guardians, frequently positioned at the entrances to temples.
