Spider Mastermind

Doomguys and Doomgals! You’ve made it to the lair of the loathsome Spiderdemon who masterminded the invasion of the Phobos and Deimos moon bases. More commonly known as the Spider Mastermind, this scion of hell debuted as the end boss in the 1993 game DOOM. Now it’s back as a 3D printable model, complete with textures so you can print it in full colour. The original monster was the creation of Greg Punchatz, who sculpted a poseable puppet based on drawings by id Software’s Kevin Cloud. This was then photographed from various angles and made into a sprite sheet that rendered in the game. My model was based on the sprites, so some artistic license was taken to re-interpret the low resolution images in 3D form. Colour printers are not able to simulate different surface finishes, so my solution to get around it was to “bake-in” effects such as the metallic shine of the legs or the glossiness of the brain. For anyone wanting to create an alternate colour scheme for their print, the texture is available in PSD format here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/fg7mrajk5oy4bee/mastermind.psd. It's split up into layers for easy editing. You can open it in https://www.photopea.com/ for example. When assembled, the print is roughly the size of a Warhammer Chaos Soul Grinder or Defiler - so if you're into wargaming, this model could make a thematic proxy.
