A spinnaker halyard is a rope used for hoisting the spinnaker sail up the mast and securing it at the top. The spinnaker, also known as a reachesail or genoa, is a lightweight, asymmetrical spinnaker that's typically used in downwind sailing conditions to catch more wind and increase boat speed. To control the shape of the spinnaker while it's flying, you can use a spinnaker sheet, which attaches to the clew of the sail and is controlled by a winch on the cockpit.
