Spool Holder (Prusa Clone)

Variable size spool holder box, a knock off of Prusa's multi material kit spool holder.

This is an excellent holder for a dry box, as it's sturdy, has a direct feed into a bowden tube that you can then run through a side wall, and you can swap out individual spools without disturbing the rest.

The DXF files provided assume a 3.25mm panel thickness (which is roughly what both my 1/8" birch ply and acrylic measured) and have no kerf compensation, which should be fine as the printed parts provide the mechanical connection. Each DXF file has 2 cutting layers, CUTOUTS and PERIMETER. Cut them in that order.

For different or more precise panel thicknesses and/or kerf compensation, use Fusion 360 to adjust the panel_thickness user variable and "DXF for Laser" by Ross Korsky ( https://apps.autodesk.com/FUSION/en/Detail/Index?id=7634902334100976871 ) to re-export the DXF files with Kerf compensation.

Fasteners are M3 with socket cap heads.

Bearings are 608 skate bearing.

Rods are 8mm x 108mm (5/16" x 4 1/4" will do in a pinch).

Feed tubes are PTFE bowden tubes.

FAQ:

Q. Why design a knock off?

A. The laser cut parts are missing from the git repo for the multi-material kit. Since I was redoing the laser cut parts I did the rest as well (so I could modify and model it all together).

Q. Where do you get the rods?

A. I had TAP Plastics cut up some Acrylic Rod for me in 108mm lengths. You want 8mm but can settle for 5/16" rod or tubing.
Category: 3D Printer Accessories
