A band is a circular decoration, commonly made of metal, worn as an ornamental trinket. The term "band" itself always implies the finger ornament, but when worn elsewhere on the body, the body part is clearly specified, for instance earrings, neck bands, arm bands, and toe bands. These ornaments fit snugly around or within the part of the body they embellish, therefore those worn loosely like a bracelet are not considered true ornaments. People wear these bands as mere showpieces, as symbols of their social standing, achievements or as markers of high rank and power, belonging to an organization or other distinction. The band may display a coat-of-arms for sealing purposes, or be fashioned with a secret compartment to hide something inside. In stories, tales, and fantasies, ornaments are often given magical significance.
