#SST – Straw Lamp ##An Illuminating Solution for Recycling Plastic Straws My youngest daughter is on a crusade to rid the world’s oceans of plastic pollution. Living on the Gulf Coast of the US, she is reminded everyday of the magnitude of her Herculean task. She regularly strolls along the beach picking up trash, inserts metal straws into birthday gifts for friends and family, and tries to convince local restaurants to switch from plastic straws to paper straws. Her diligence and dedication to this onerous challenge is so inspiring that I felt that I had to make a contribution of my own to this cause. Hence, this “Save the Sea Turtles, or SST, Straw Lamp” project was born. ##Basic Parts* - White LED – COM-00531; $0.95 - 220-ohm Resistor – COM-10969; $7.95 - Coin Cell Battery Holder – 2x CR2032 Batteries; PRT-12618; $1.95; PRT-00338; $1.95 (x2) - Scrap Wire - Heat Shrink Tubing; tape will work, too - 5x Discarded Plastic Drinking Straws *Parts available at: https://www.sparkfun.com The construction of this lamp couldn’t be simpler. Collect five plastic straws from the garbage can; check your local coffee shop for these items. Assemble the simple LED circuit and slip it inside one of the straws. Grasp the straws together and slide them through the ring on the bi-pod 3D-printed piece, then slip the 3D-printed end cap over the loose straw ends. That’s it...the SST – Straw Lamp is complete and ready for use. Based on the described parts in the schematic, you can expect the light from this lamp to be roughly equivalent to a traditional night light. Perfect for shining a ray of recycled light on the nightstand for your own budding environmentalist. You can read about plastic straw pollution here: https://www.strawlessocean.org/faq Enjoy.
