Basil is a staple in household kitchens around the world. From garnishing pasta in Italy to infusion in Thai curries, basil is part of the cuisine of cultures across the globe. There is no question why the word basil etymologically comes from the Greek word “basileus”, meaning king. Among its various culinary uses to its distinct taste, it can be considered the king of herbs, as proposed by several cookery authors. Despite its importance, there are few basil grinders which match the splendor and beauty of the herb itself. With the increased demand for aesthetically pleasing kitchen products, why sacrifice the beauty of both the kitchen area and the basil herb? The inspiration for a revolutionary grinder design was drawn from St. Basil’s Cathedral, part of the Kremlin in Moscow. The decorative domes and intricate composition of the famed building create the luxurious kitchen appliance consumers are looking for. The fine details of the architecture of the St. Basil’s Cathedral provide a firm grip for the user to easily grind the spice. The top is easily screwed off to reveal a container which keeps basil leaves fresh until used as an ingredient in dishes. The St. Basil’s Basil Grinder is primarily designed for basil leaves but can be used with any similar spices comprised of leaves. The sharp stainless steel blades make for either a fine or coarse grind, depending on the number of times the grinder is rotated. The St. Basil’s Basil Grinder provides customers a beautiful addition to their kitchen as a fully functional spice grinder. This idea has been presented by Neera Chattopadhyay of The Academy of Math, Science, and Engineering.
