The church of St Mary-Le-Port is a Scheduled Ancient Monument located in Castle Park, Bristol on the north side of the River Avon. During the Second World War, Bristol was heavily bombed between November 1940 and April 1941 and Mary-Le-Port was burned pout during an air-raid in 1940. The majority of the church walls, including the nave, north aisle, chancel and north-east Priest House were subsequently partially demolished to low standing ruins. The walls of St Mary-le-Port are predominantly built of Pennant sandstone with areas of later re-used stone as repair or infill. Excavations carried out by Philip Rhatz in the early 1960s and published in 1985 suggest a possible Saxon origin for the church. The study of the excavation results has also suggested a phasing for the development from the 12th century, the 13th century and the later 15th and early 16th centuries.
