Bes was usually shown with a fearsome face and tall feathered head dress. His ferocious appearance made him well suited to ward off evil, and he was particularly associated with the protection of women in childbirth and young children. His worship continued into the Roman Period, when he is sometimes shown in the dress of a soldier.
