Staunton (Modified) Chess Set The Staunton chess set is composed of a style of chess pieces used often for competitions. The journalist Nathaniel Cooke is credited with the design, and they are named after the English chess master Howard Staunton. This is a modified design of the Staunton chess style adapted to be easier to print on a 3D Printer with no supports. Each piece size and weight is detailed in table below. Each piece has a cutout for an M12 mutter (nut) to be inserted for weighting. The dimensions of the M12 are appx. 21x19x10 mm. The depth of each cutout is appx. 10.4 mm to accommodate the 10mm depth of the nut, The chart picture uploaded lists the appx. weights of each piece with the nut inserted and glued with a 3mm thick Felt (filz) base for easy movement. The pieces fit well with a Square Size of 50 to 55 mm Chess Piece Box The box has a slide top and is sized to accommodate this set. Details • Square Size 50 to 55 • Total Weight of Chess Pieces 841,6 gm • Weight of Box 319,30 gm • Box Dimensions 200x140x90 • Total Weight of Chess Pieces and Box 1160,9 gm • Chess Pieces 32 Printing Each piece can be printed standing straight up with no supports required. Make sure your machine is well calibrated (leveled) for printing the box and you may want to run the bed a little on the hot side to prevent warping on the bottom and/or lid. Not a problem with a well-tuned MK3S+. The box was printed using • Filament PLA Prusament (Galaxy Black) • Infill 30% • Layer Height .20 The chess pieces were printed using • Black PLA Prusament (Galaxy Black) • White PLA Prusament (Vanilla White) • Infill 30% • Layer Height .15 Quality Weighting the Pieces and attaching felt • Insert the nut into the base of the piece • Apply some glue (model glue works well) to the base and nut • Put the glued surface lightly on the felt piece, don't press too hard • Allow to dry • Trim excess felt
