For competition purposes to transfer the torque from the crankshaft to the gearbox, often straight cut gears are used instead of the helical ones. Straight cut gears have the advantages that they do not put a side load thrust on the bearings and friction is reduced. But they deliver a distinct acoustic whine that would not be acceptable for normal road use. The top gear sits on one end of the crankshaft. The middle gear (idler gear) transmits the torque to the input gear that sits on the first motion shaft of the gearbox. The drop gear set suits to the gear assembly I have uploaded earlier. The gear kits are still available new from different suppliers like Jack Knight Gears or Quaife for example. A five-speed-gearbox of straight cut variant is available also from Colotti-Trasmissioni.
