Funerary Stele of an Unknown Man Circa 145-165 AD (Early Reign of Hadrian) Laurion, Greece Marble Musée d'Art et d'Histoire (Musée du Cinquantenaire, Brussels, Belgium). CapturingReality.com. This stele bears a striking resemblance to a small temple, with its architrave adorned with hemiones resting on pilasters. The inscription clearly identifies the deceased as "son of Herakieon, a Milesian," a man who made his living as an ox dealer. Standing proudly in front of us is this professional, dressed in a chiton with sleeves and belt, wrapped in a himation. His staff resembles more of a club, evoking memories of Hercules bringing back Geryon's herds. The relatively low artistic value of this work is somewhat offset by the fact that such Greek prototypes rarely depict individuals engaged in their occupations.
