Sub Benchy with Keel to make float right side up in tub All real work here was done by papi8570, so thanks papi for my kids bathtub submarine! I just wanted to make it float, not on its side, so I made a Keel for the sub. Its not perfect, but it does the trick. I filled it with play sand from the sandbox and then epoxied the keel to the bottom of the submarine. I didn't know the boyancy, so it was a guess. If you want it to sit a bit lower, you could add some water in after the sand. Or use something heavier in the keel. Also, I made an internal skinnier slot, for the sand to go through and hopefully stay in place a bit better during assembly, but the slot part doesn't print great without supports. I know because I forgot to add supports when I printed. Doesnt really matter though, sand stays in place and you can't see it. I printed at sub and keel at 100% size I am assuming the keel would scale with sub, but not sure. As you can see in the picture the periscope was broken off (almost immediately) print settings: Prusa i3 MK3 printer .4mm nozzle I printed at .15mm layer height, but .2 would probably work too perimeters: 3 extrusion width: .45 infill: doesn't matter, it's a shell supports: up to you, not needed ORIGINAL FROM papi8570 https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3102602 ******************************************************************************************** Not wanting to just do a remix by taking the cabin and putting it on a submarine, took the original concept of the Benchy as an early cabin boat from the 30's or 40's (my interpretation) so I wanted an "older" style submarine, just a little cartoonish. I designed this based on the one man subs the Japanese used during the Pearl Harbor attack, small and simple. the two prints are at 50% and 75%, smaller than 50 and the bars on the windows wont print well. Enjoy! **(9-16-18)Slight update, may need a raft depending on printer. Mine printed fine on the CR-10S but the tailfin failed on my Prusa (Sorry Walter)** **(9-18-18) Another update due to inconsistencies in printing on different machines. I added built in support for the horizontal fins and increased the length of the fins so the first layer prints as one piece so no brim will be needed. PLEASE NOTE THIS CAN BE A LONG PRINT IF DONE AT FULL SIZE, BEST SIZE IS 75%** # Print Settings Printer Brand: Prusa Printer: i3 MK3 Rafts: Doesn't Matter Supports: Doesn't Matter Resolution: .2 Infill: 20% Filament_brand: Printed Solid "Daily" Filament_color: Orange, blue and red Filament_material: PLA Notes: Printed at 215 on a 60deg bed # How I Designed This Used Fusion 360 and started with a tube shape and just started adding to it until it "looked" right !
