This are two "clones" (so to speak) of the Supernova Taillights. Both the smaller and the bigger M99 version.

I know that Supernova uses some custom LEDs to get street legal, but in the end a small row of LEDs will not really blind anyone and be perfectly visible as well. Since I find the original prices of this bikelight between 50 up to 100€ (big version) simply nuts for a few LEDs and some aluminum housing I went for the DIY route.

The smaller version is made for three 5 mm LEDs and 50 mm width for mounting to a rear rack or a matching saddle adapter. The bigger version is made for six 5 mm LEDs and 80 mm width for mounting holes. I also added a simple adapter to mount

the smaller version to 80 mm mounting holes.

The rear of the light is open. This way you can simply wire up any 5 mm super bright red LED of your choice matching the voltage you want to use. I for one ordered six "12V" LEDs with a build in resistor and will simply put them in parallel. By soldering several LEDs in a row plus some resistor this rear light can easily be connected directly to your e-bike

battery.

After soldering everything together simply fill the rear with hotglue or some other sealant such as silicon.

Edit: I just soldered my six 5 mm LEDs in place and this thing is SUPERBRIGHT !

I payed below 2€ for those six LEDs. It is hard to transport via picture but this backlight should be visible for at least 500 m in the dark.

Hint: Put the LEDs on the outside of the printed housing for soldering and then drop them inside the housing once finished. Ensure that you do not have a short circuit prior sealing the back side. I guess the tripple LED version should be more than sufficent.

Edit #2: I have added version two for both backlights which are a bit wider and leave more room for soldering the LEDs. Also I added backplates which you can screw from the back of the housing if you do not want to use any hotglue to seal it. Also I added a holder for the tripple light to enable mounting to the to your seatpost similar to the original.
Category: Vehicles
