This earthenware horse was excavated from a Chinese tomb in the 19th Century. Many tombs were uncovered during the construction of the railway in the 1880s. It was purchased by Oldham antiquarian Francis Buckley from a British Missionary in China. Francis Buckley donated the ceramic horse to Oldham Museum in 1937. He believed that it was one of the earliest objects of this type to come to Britain. It has a yellow glaze, with red and black colouring applied to the saddle detail. Chemical reactions would have created the colours in the kiln firing. Its decorative style is from the Tang dynasty and it is thought to date from between the years 618 -907 AD.
