Teaching doll showing an iron lung
sketchfab
A wooden model of an iron lung, crafted to encase a plastic infant doll and bedding, likely served as a teaching tool at the Lord Mayor Treloar Orthopaedic Hospital in Alton, Hampshire, England, between 1930 and 1950. This unique display was designed to prepare child patients for their treatment of poliomyelitis by showcasing the iron lung's functionality. An iron lung is a life-saving device that assists patients whose breathing muscles have been paralyzed by disease. Although its peak usage occurred during the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s, some elderly survivors of polio still rely on these machines for their respiratory needs. https://collection.sciencemuseumgroup.org.uk/objects/co8015272/ RIGHTS: The title, made, maker, and details information in this description are released under Creative Commons Zero.
