What is it?
These are two tablets depicting a shortened version of the Ten Commandments in Hebrew.
Shortened Version?
The Ten Commandments come from more than one source. I used Exodus 20 to create these. Exodus 20:1-13 states: And God spoke all these words, saying: I am the LORD thy God, who brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. Thou shalt have no other gods before Me. Thou shalt not make unto thee a graven image, nor any manner of likeness, of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth;thou shalt not bow down unto them, nor serve them; for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate Me;and showing mercy unto the thousandth generation of them that love Me and keep My commandments. Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh His name in vain. Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work;but the seventh day is a sabbath unto the LORD thy God, in it thou shalt not do any manner of work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, nor thy man-servant, nor thy maid-servant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates;for in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested on the seventh day; wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it. Honour thy father and thy mother, that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee. Thou shalt not murder. Thou shalt not commit adultery. Thou shalt not steal. Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour.Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's house; thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's wife, nor his man-servant, nor his maid-servant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbour's. Thank you to https://www.mechon-mamre.org/p/pt/pt0220.htm for providing the above translation. I decided to make the abbreviated version for two reasons: 1) Most people know the commandments in their shortened form anyways. 2) It is impossible to get that much text onto a 3D printed tablet for most printers.
What are the 10 Commandments?
This is actually something that is disagreed on. The original Hebrew does not call them the Ten Commandments and does not number them. Which leads to confusion about the counting. For example, the Talmud, Catechism of the Catholic Church, and Reformed Christians have "I am the LORD your God..." as the first commandment. While Septuagint, Philo, Samaritan Pentateuch, Augustine, and Lutherans have "I am the LORD your God..." as a preamble to the Ten Commandments. These tablets contain some form of all the commandments except for the commandment "You shall set up these stones, which I command you today, on Mount Gerizim." as it is unique to the Samaritan Pentateuch and not part of the Ten Commandments according to pretty much everybody else.
The Shortened Version:
Please note these are translations of the Hebrew used into English. Not the English translation translated back into Hebrew. So if these English words do not match your preferred translation, it's ok. The original Hebrew is the original Hebrew and that's what's on the tablets.
Tablet 1:
I am Hashem your G-d There will not be any other G-d before me You shall not make for yourself an idol You shall not bear the name of Jehovah your G-d in vain Remember the Sabbath to sanctify it
Tablet 2:
Respect your father and mother You will not kill Do not commit adultery You will not steal Thou shalt not bear false witness You will not covet your neighbor Special thanks to https://biblehub.com for providing the Hebrew text.
Thank You:
Special thanks to the Tinkercad community and to Selva3d community for providing their 3D services for free. Most of you have probably heard of Tinkercad, a beginner 3D modeling service. http://app.selva3d.com/transform lets you turn a 2d black and white image into a 3d model; which is perfect for projects like this.
Changes:
Please feel free to remix this thing! However, if you are just wanting some simple change, send me a message or leave a comment. I have the original files so it would be super quick for me to do.
