Because the average person will continually check their phone out of habit, I believed that a desktop notification system in itself would not be enough to inhibit an average user's phone habit. Terrapin strives to encourage productivity by creating a mental and physical separation between the user and their phone while providing a playful aesthetic and interaction. Just like the product's namesake, the phone goes into its shell and hides away from the outside world until it is safe to come out. When you twist its shell, the phone is concealed and a display is revealed to show email and social media notifications, incoming call information, alarms, and scheduled event reminders. Social media notifications are not persistent as they serve as a distraction a majority of the time, so alerts can be customized by the user to be displayed for however long they see fit.
