The Fish Woman

The Fish Woman

The present marble is a replica of the original, sold by Rodin in 1915 to Mrs Spreckels through the American dancer and choreographer, Loie Fuller (now in the California Palace of the Legion of Honor, San Francisco). Some believe that this decorative piece was meant to be part of a fountain because of some details: the woman with the open mouth and with facial features recalling a fish, wave-like hair around her face. Some others see the Fish Woman connected to "The Gates of Hell". Heads coming out of water is a frequently occurring theme in Dante's poem.
