Named in homage to Alexandre Dumas’ novel The Three Musketeers (1844), this set of four pots extends reference to the central character d’Artagnan, who at the close of the narrative, becomes the fourth musketeer. Dr Iskandar’s ‘portrait’ was inspired by the flourish and flamboyance of these swashbuckling adventurers and their famous rallying call “All for one and one for all!”. The pots are depicted as united but still individual, as in the novel. Black ‘Athos’ is the father figure, mentor and melancholic one; Orange ‘Porthos’ the brash, vain and fearless swordsman; Blue ‘Aramis’ the debonair, amorous and loyal musketeer; and ‘d’Artagnan’s’ lavender pot suggests his youthful dream of joining the ranks of the musketeers. Dr Iskandar has created solid, ungraduated colours using coloured slips. All four pots have similar ovoid forms and sizes; each bears a small lug-handle on its shoulder.
