The relief shows a group of soldiers leaving home, on the right is a woman waving good-bye with a little girl by her side. It was raised on May 30, 1986 (architect V. S. Vasilchikov, sculptors father and son V. P. and S. V. Astapov). The monument is dedicated to the fighters from the students, teachers and professors of Leningrad State University (now St. Petersburg State University), who defended Russia during the Second World War. The inscription on the flag above the soldiers says: "For the protection of the Soviet family". The inscription underneath roughly translates to "In the immortality of the departed, 1941-1945."
