The Redesigned Coffee Pot As a waitress, I know how hard holding a coffee pot can be. If you find a way to hold it without burning yourself, the handle begins to slip; if you want to hold the pot steady while pouring, the chances of not scorching your hand are slim to none. The biggest flaw of the handle is its thickness. With only 0.3 inches of slippery material, the handle is very difficult to grasp. Also, the only thing separating hot coffee and skin is the glass pot. So, there is no protection from being burned.I proposed an entirely new handle design for a coffee pot. Made of a sturdy plastic, the handle is easy to grip and fits an average hand without a problem. The angle of the handle to the rest of the pot is more vertical than most coffee pots, which will transfer the pot’s weight down through the handle instead of sideways like a frying pan. The flexible shield that attaches to the handle will also prevent any skin from touching the hot pot. The combination of a sturdy, graspable handle and a safety shield feature makes this pot more efficient and safer for anyone to use. The spout of the coffee pot is almost the same as regular pots; the angle is already perfect for pouring, so it wasn’t worth changing. The glass part of the pot is cut so that the weight of the liquids is centered closer to the handle instead of in front of it, which will make it easier to hold. Some might wonder why I made an entire coffee pot instead of making a handle that could be adapted to any pot. The problem with an adaptable handle is that no coffee pot is exactly the same; so, that design would not be very efficient. If I had access to several coffee pots to measure and study, I would like to improve my design so that it changes the shape of any coffee pot handle. This way, the part could be cheap and interchangeable. If I were to market that product, I could even make the inserts customizable so it is more comfortable for much different hand types. For best results, this design should be printed using Polyjet. I only have access to FDM 3D printing, so I could not provide a screen capture of the Polyjet printing, but I think this project would turn out better if it was printing all as one piece instead of the separate parts. The part titled “redesign shield” should be a flexible rubber material. The “redesign handle” should be a dense plastic. The “redesign glass” should be made out of heat-resistant glass.
