Laurance MacDonald (1799-1878) was born in Perthshire, moving to Rome in the 1820s to become a sculptor of portrait busts. He was a founding member of the British Academy of Arts in Rome (1822-23). In 1827 MacDonald succeeded Samuel Joseph as the most influential sculptor involved in the Edinburgh Phrenological Society, the collection with is now in the care of The Anatomical Museum. The sculpture is a rendition of the famous 'David' (the most popular depiction was by Michelangelo, also on Scan the World), where a very youthful hero is depicted in the action of tossing his sling to kill The Goliath.
