The Unicorn is Unified , by Scottish contemporary artist, Alice Martin, is a reuse of the 3D model of a modern sculpture atop Stirling Castle’s Great Hall for the HES conference Monuments in Monuments. The focus behind the work was to symbolically explore the idea of recreation. The modern statue was designed with historic etchings, and Martin wanted to continue to build upon the past. The piece echos the seven recreated tapestries of The Hunt of the Unicorn series also at the castle, the Medieval originals housed in the MET. Martin chose to combine both representations by superimposing imagery from one of those original tapestries, The Unicorn in Captivity, licenced under CCO 1.0, onto the model. Half of the figure is eroded away, conveying loss over time, and emphasising the importance of conservation and memory. |Partly funded by GOSSIP|
