Throughout its period of mintage there were various designs, but the most common shows an anchor on the obverse, surrounded by a Greek legend or a series of circles. The anchor is believed to be a symbol adopted from the Seleucids, who represented their naval strength with it. On the reverse is an eight-pointed star, either alone or with a diadem. These coins were struck by hand by inserting the bronze between two moulds and striking them with a hammer. Therefore, their shape is generally irregular and they are off-center.
