Konrad Zuse designed the mechanical Z1 computer and built it in 1936. He worked with Helmut Schreyer in 1937 on electronic vacuum tube flip-flops. The Z3 was finished in 1941 on behalf of the German government and Zuse went into hiding in an underground bunker during World War II to work on designs for the Z4.
