The famous Thorens TD 160 uses a mains synchronous motor and a double pulley to switch between 33 and 45 rpm. This applies to other Thorens turntables as well. To get 78rpm for playing shellacs, I designed a pulley to fit the original molden pulley. No further modification is required, just put the extension to the original pulley and put the beld on it. The speed selector has to be switched between the off and 33rpm position. To get 33/45rpm back again, just remove the pulley and use the original one. In order to play shellacs, make sure you have a cartridge with a stylus suitable for the bigger grooves mounted, standard stereo cartridges are not suitable.
