This lesson is an introduction to Tinkercad or Morphi, 3D printing, and game modification to provide access for visually impaired students. Print Settings Printer Brand: MakerBot Printer: MakerBot Replicator 2 Rafts: No Supports: No Standards CCSS Overview and Background Students will be working on modifying a tic tac toe game to create raised pieces using Tinkercad or Morphi. Students will accurately measure in metric to create the pieces. Standards Solve problems involving measurement and conversion of measurements. CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.4.MD.A.1 Know relative sizes of measurement units within one system of units including km, m, cm; kg, g; lb, oz.; l, ml; hr, min, sec. Within a single system of measurement, express measurements in a larger unit in terms of a smaller unit. Lesson Plan and Activity Introduction Using the original tic tac toe game, pose the following question - How could we modify this game to provide access for diverse learners (difficulty seeing)? Creating with Tinkercad This is the step where differentiation should occur based on your knowledge of your students. For younger students or students who have never used Tinkercad: Using the attached generic .stl file, students can import the basic foundation of the project into Tinkercad and drag and drop the letters on the tiles. Tinkercad is not a collaborative application but for this part, each student or pair of students could do the word to be introduced to how Tinkercad works. For older students or students who have used Tinkercad: Students can measure the squares of the game board and design from the beginning. Tinkercad is not a collaborative application but for this part, each student or pair of students could do one set of playing pieces to be introduced to how Tinkercad works. Creating with Morphi Using the iPad app Morphi, students have several different ways that they can create the pieces. Scenario 1: Lay down the square base dimensions using the square shape and use the designed letters on the side bar. Scenario 2: Lay down the square base dimensions using the square shape and use the drawing tool to create a customized X or O. Scenario 1 Scenario 2 Drawing in Morphi allows you to personalize the letters Exporting and Printing the Design Students will need to export the design for 3D printing from Tinkercad or Morphi as an .stl file and share it with the teacher for final printing. Printing will take approximately 25 minutes per piece.
